Girls on the Run of Suffolk County has completed its first year, and what an incredible year it’s been. We had our first season with a team out of Beacon Hill and practicing at TERSF along the Charles River. We started our program off with great ambitions. What we got in return was 12 girls who made us truly appreciate what Girls on the Run has to offer.
Our season ended with a 5k in West Roxbury organized by the Parkway Running Club. Walter’s Run was an opportunity for the girls to take part in a 5k, which they trained all season for, while giving back to kids their age. All proceeds from Walter’s Run go to organizations that help children including Globe Santa. We are looking forward to taking part in Walter’s Run again this winter with a much larger group of Girls!
Our spring season brought a new relationship as we expanded to a second team at the Boys and Girls Club’s West End House. We ended up with almost 30 girls between our two teams and once again witnessed the difference Girls on the Run makes in a young girl’s life.
On May 14th our council held our first ever, New Balance sponsored 5k. The weather looked gloomy but in the end the rain held off and we had a great day with almost 300 participants, 60 volunteers and a supportive team of Hill House staff members. By all accounts the day was a huge success and we’re already planning on how to make it better next year. We would like to say thank you to all the volunteers who helped us pull the event together. The girls had a wonderful time and we couldn’t have done it without the help of each and every volunteer or our Hill House counterparts.
