Each season Girls on the Run Greater Boston identifies and selects a dynamic group of coaches to lead each of our teams of 8-20 girls. Coaches are parents, teachers, school administrators, college students and other community members who are committed to developing and celebrating our girls.

Head Coach Overview

Our Fall season kicks off in September and ends in December with our Fall 5k on Sunday, December 3rd. Our coach needs are based on site locations/needs and usually take place during after-school hours. We ask that coaches commit to the full 10-week season, along with completing in-person and online training prior to the start of the season.

The Head Coach is a volunteer position that works with a team of coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to program participants. This position entails approximately four hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Head coach must be a woman
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • CPR and First Aid certified
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Attend all (two) practices per week for a weekly time commitment of approximately 4 hours
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Prepare, organize and supervise weekly lessons
  • Collaborate with other coaches for successful lesson delivery
  • Facilitate communication with parents/guardians of program participants
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K
  • Plan and coordinate your team’s end of season party

Assistant Coach Overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach at a Girls on the Run program site while serving as a role model and mentor for program participants. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must consent to and complete a background check
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Able to attend practices once or twice per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Assist with all aspects of the facilitation of weekly lessons
  • Collaborate with other coaches for successful lesson delivery
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K

Junior Coach Overview

The Junior Coach is a volunteer position for high school students to assist the Head and Assistant Coaches at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for a 10-week commitment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Junior Coach must be 16-18 years old
  • Must be a high school student
  • Attend Girls on the Run coach training
  • Able to attend practices once or twice per week
  • Have fun!

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a role model for program participants
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down of games and lessons
  • Provide one-on-one attention to program participants
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Lead an activity with assistance and supervision of the Head Coach if desired
  • Participate in the Girls on the Run 5K

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I GET TRAINED AS A COACH?

Girls on the Run offers in person and online training for all registered coaches at registered sites. Coaches will select the session within their coach application form. Once you are officially set up with a site, you will receive more information. 

WHEN ARE PRACTICE TIMES?

Each Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole site has their own days of the week and time of day for their sessions. Once season registration is open, you can browse the Locations for an idea of days of the week and times. Please keep in mind that most teams do practice during afterschool hours.
