Star Power Spotlight: Mari Kale
Mari Kale first learned about Girls on the Run Greater Boston in 2019 when her daughter participated at Baker Elementary in Brookline. Watching her daughter’s confidence, kindness, and sense of voice grow left a lasting impression. Around the same time, she began running herself and discovered how empowering it felt to build strength within a supportive community.
In spring 2022, while teaching at Harmony Grove Elementary in Framingham, she helped launch the school’s first Girls on the Run team. Nearly all participants were English Language Learners, so the coaching team translated materials into Portuguese, adapted lessons with visuals, and built strong communication with families. At its peak, the team served nearly 30 girls with nine educators. This year, Harmony Grove celebrates its fifth season — a testament to the strong foundation Mari helped build.
Girls on the Run removes barriers for families. At Harmony Grove, every girl who applied was able to participate through financial assistance, and grant-funded transportation to the 5K allowed students to experience something far beyond their school community. Seeing the girls arrive at the stadium, proud and confident, was a powerful reminder to Mari of the program’s impact.
Now teaching at Lawrence Elementary in Brookline, she continues to coach and witness how Girls on the Run helps girls grow into confident, compassionate, and strong individuals.
Mari says, “If you’re reading this and wondering whether you should coach—please do! You don’t have to be a runner or have years of experience. I only started running about five years ago, and Girls on the Run has shown me that what truly matters is showing up with love, care, and enthusiasm. Coaching is an incredibly rewarding experience, and anyone who is willing to support and encourage girls can make a meaningful impact. If you’re on the fence, take the leap—you would be a wonderful addition to any Girls on the Run team across Greater Boston!”
